The Heating Cable comes with a water-resistant thermostat. The Heating cable is submersed into the bed of fine gravel or coarse river sand in a wave like pattern. The gravel or sand is then moistened to conduct heat.
The grower plants their cuttings directly into the growing media above the cable or they place trays of cuttings or seedlings on top of the media bed and insert the temperature probe into the growing media beneath. Ebb and Flow propagation tables can also be placed on top of the media bed. This heats up the table plates as well as any cell trays or plants that sit on top of the Ebb and Flow table plates.
As the heating cable heats up, this heat is radiated into the surrounding media bed and anything that may be growing in the media or on top of it. When the media reaches the required temperature, the thermostat then shuts off power to the cable.
Don’t risk the life of your seedlings and having to spend hours digging up a carefully laid cable because an inferior, low-cost cable was purchased “to save costs” – and it became faulty. You get what you pay for!

The cables are manufactured to very high standards and have a layer of aluminium armour under the PVC insulation which protects the cable and allows for easier installation.

Seeds and cuttings can be planted:
- Directly into soil spread on top of the heat bed sand (with a plastic film barrier under the layer of soil)
- In trays resting on top of the heat bed sand
- In pots partially buried with an additional later of soil on top of the heat bed sand.
When the cable is installed, it is laid out in a wave formation running lengthways along the table with a 50 – 70mm gap between each wavelength (to protect the cable from damage and to give optimal heat distribution).
The 230 Volt x 10 Amp thermostat with 120mm long temperature probe can control 1 or 2 Heating Cables at a time.
The heating cable is supplied detached from the thermostat as should be connected after the cable is laid and wired by a registered electrician.

Ideal Heat Bed Design
A standard propagating table should have 100mm high sides with a firm plywood base.
A sheet of minimum 25mm thickness polystyrene should be attached to the base of the table frame i.e. underneath the plywood base.
The polystyrene must not come in contact with the heat cable.
The Polystyrene must be kept dry. If it comes in contact with water it will become waterlogged and will break down.
The dimensions of the table must not vary from the dimensions the cable was specified for. For example if you ordered a cable based on a 1m x 5m table (5m2) you can’t downsize the table dimensions to become a 1m x 3.9m table (3.9m2)
5m2 requires a 90-metre-long cable whereas 3.9m2 requires a 70m long cable.
The cables can’t be shortened. If the table dimensions change after the cable has been purchased, please discuss this with Pure Hydroponics in case the cable needs to be returned and swapped for a shorter or longer cable.
Cable Installation
- Lay a sheet of waterproof film (i.e. greenhouse film or Panda film) over the plywood base of the table. The edges of the film should cover the 100mm high sides of the table.
- Lay a 25mm thick layer of washed river sand onto of the waterproof film.
- Lay a sheet of galvanised cage mesh onto the 25mm layer of river sand
- The cable can then be laid at the prescribed wavelength distances and be loosely clipped to the mesh with cable ties or twist ties.
- A 50mm layer of washed river sand is then laid on top of the cable.
- Nursery trays can then be placed on top of the river sand.
- If soil is to be placed on top of the river sand then another layer of greenhouse film or panda film should be laid over the river sand to prevent the soil contaminating the river sand.
- Lay the cable onto the mesh following the prescribed distances (instructions are below for determining wavelength distances etc)
Wavelength Sizing and Layout
To size the cable and how it needs to be arranged do as follows:
Work out the length and width of the propagating bed area.
E.g 1.4m x 800mm = 1.12m2
Therefore a 20 metre long (200 Watt) cable is best.
Then divide the 20 metre cable by 1.4m (length of bed) = 14.28. This means you require 15 runs (wavelengths) of cable.
Then divide the width of the bed by 15 runs = 800mm/15 runs = 53mm / 2 = 26.5mm
Therefore, you have 26.5mm gap on the left-hand side of the bed and 14 x 53mm gaps between the runs of cable, and a 26.5mm gap on the right-hand side of the bed.
The red part of the cable must be fully covered by sand (if it is exposed or touches another part of the cable it will melt). The insulated black part of the cable that connects to the thermostat can be exposed.
The cable is laid lengthways along the longest part of the table as per diagram below.
Laying the Cable
To lay the cable first double check that the description label on the heat cable matches the length you have ordered.
Then insert the insulated black part of the cable that connects to the thermostat through the wall of the heat bed first (insert it from the inside of the heat bed wall so it sticks out the side of the table)
Then unroll the heat cable as it is installed into the wavelengths. Putting the roll of cable onto a turn table allows it to be easily unrolled as you lay the cable. The cable can then be loosely clipped to the wire mesh with cable ties.
After laying the cable a 50mm layer of washed river sand is then laid on top of the cable. An electrician then completes the wiring of the thermostat to the end of the cable.
The thermostat probe should be placed on top of the washed river sand and under a nursery tray for best results.
The washed river sand should be kept moist to conduct heat.
The width of the wavelengths of cable should not be less than 45mm and not more than 60mm.
55 -60mm is ideal to give even root growth throughout the heat bed.
The heat loading should range from 150 Watts to 200 Watts per square metre (m2) giving a soil temperature of between 17 and 27 degrees Celsius.
Warning
- Do not let the thermostat probe touch the heat cable
- A residual Current device (RCD) must be installed in the electrical circuit by your electrician
- Never crease or kink the cable when laying. A 25mm radius is the minimum curve.
- Do not use sharp objects on the propagation beds (sharp temperature probes,forks etc)
- All of the heat cable must be installed and never shortened
- A thermostat must always be used
- All electrical work must be undertaken by a registered electrician.
A 20-year full service warranty covers our heating cables.
In the event of a fault that can be tracked back to a manufacturing
defect, the heat cable will be repaired or replaced free of charge. To apply for this
warranty the installation must be performed by an authorized installer or registered electrician.
A copy of the Certificate of Compliance (CoC) may also be requested.
