The Balance Arm Misting Controller is a simple yet effective controller for the humidification & irrigation of propagation areas.

The controller ensures that a consistent level of moisture is maintained around valuable seedlings and cuttings/clones.

The unit is supplied in a kit which contains everything you need to get started. (NZ$335.00 + GST)

This includes:

  • Balance Arm Controller with Mercury Switch

  • Three Misting Nozzles (15mm BSP Thread)
  • Power Pack (24 Volt AC)

 

All the grower needs to do is supply their own 15mm PVC pressure pipe with 15mm Faucet Sockets or 15mm Faucet Tees to screw the misting nozzles into as well as any extra misting nozzles that may be required to cover a larger area.

The nozzles need to be arranged in a 900mm x 900mm configuration for good coverage.

Alternatively, the grower can just purchase the controller only (NZ$205.00 + GST) and use their own misting nozzles and solenoid valves to set up a professional misting system.

The Balance Arm controller has a sensitive gauze covered stainless steel “artificial leaf”. This simulates the wetting and drying of a plant’s leaf surface.

The Balance Arm Controller acts like an intelligent switch.

The electric solenoid isolation valve, which feeds pressurised fresh water to the misting nozzles, has two low voltage 24V AC wires, which connect to the two contacts on a mercury switch. The mercury switch sits inside a cradle on the support branch holding the “artificial leaf”.

When the mercury flows over the two contacts, this closes the contact and allows an electrical current to pass between the two solenoid valve wires. The solenoid valve then becomes energised and opens, allowing pressurised water to pass through it to the misting nozzles. This then commences the misting cycle.

When a misting cycle is in progress the “artificial leaf” surface becomes wet.

As it accumulates moisture it gradually becomes heavier and the leaf starts to tilt down. This moves the mercury to one end of the mercury switch and exposes one of the contacts.  This breaks the electrical current to the solenoid valve and shuts it off. 

The pressurised water then stops flowing to the misting nozzles and they turn off, thereby completing the misting cycle. 

As the “artificial leaf” dries out it becomes lighter it begins to rise. The mercury then flows to the opposite end of the switch and covers both of the contacts.  This tips the mercury switch to the “On” position.  The solenoid valve then becomes re-energised, and another misting cycle commences. The misting cycle continues until the “artificial leaf” becomes wet and heavy enough to tilt the leaf and close the switch again.

The sensitivity of the artificial leaf is able to be adjusted with a threaded weight. This enables the grower to fine tune the appropriate misting intervals to suit their crop requirements.

On warm dry days there will be more misting cycles than on cooler, overcast days, as the moisture on the artificial leaf will dry faster when there is more heat and less humidity. This matches the moisture demand of the growing media or crop and prevents drying out of the crop or over watering & over humidification of the propagating area.  As a result a high-quality crop of seedlings and cuttings/clones can be produced with a high % of success.

No electrician is required to install the units as it is all low voltage 24VAC wiring that can be safely done by the grower.
