The nutrient strength and pH level of a tank will be continually fluctuating as the crop feeds and freshwater is added to replace what is used by the plants during transpiration.
Fluctuations in nutrient and pH strength will affect the flavour, texture, growth speed and health of the crop.
Manual dosing is an impractical and inefficient way of keeping on top of these fluctuations and it is also a very time-consuming exercise for the grower.
Manual dosing is also a dangerous activity especially when pH is concerned. Commercial growers simply do not have the time or the patience to manually dose acid correctly for pH control. They have a tendency to add too much acid, or a dose which is too strong in concentration, and not allow sufficient time for it to mix in before the next acid dose is made. As a result, there is a high risk that the pump will suck up a concentrated glob of acid and send this out to the crop where it can cause immediate root damage. The overdose is quickly forgotten by the time the crop shows symptoms of root damage.
Many growers also do not practice the necessary safety procedures when handling or using acid. Only one splash of concentrated acid is enough to cause blindness. It is therefore essential that growers use a drum pump and safety measure device when decanting acid and wear gloves and protective eyewear as well as an apron.
To overcome the various problems associated with manual dosing, an automated dosing controller should be used.
